The Implementation of a United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on School Infrastructure and Train |
| This project involved construction of kitchen with stores and latrines for boys and girls in numerous primary schools in Isiolo, Narok North and South districts and the informal settlements of Nairobi. The project also included supply and installation of rainwater harvesting facilities and installation of hand-washing facilities. The latrines were girls-friendly and physically-challenged (boys and girls) friendly, while the boys latrines were also provided with urinals. The projects were jointly sponsored by WFP and Unilever and Hearts for Kids and Wilde Ganzen from the Netherlands and Drew Barrymore. Through these projects, thousands of primary school pupils have been able to access hygienic sanitation facilities and clean drinking water. The project also involved capacity development of the district water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) committees, school management committees (SMC); teachers and children peer-educators as part of sustainability for positive behaviour change. During the projects commissioning meeting attended by all the government line ministries, community leaders, senior officers from WFP and Unilever, and other dignitaries in Narok, the District Education Officer for Narok North district, Mrs Jane Mtange observed that the functionality, quality of the workmanship and the capacity building component of the project had made the participating schools models in water, sanitation and hygiene practices. She noted that in the participating schools, pupils had already formed environmental health and sanitation clubs, which were overseeing the cleaning of the latrines and provision of water and soap for hand-washing. She observed that the project will also have a trickledown effect in the local communities where latrines coverage was low since the WASH-aware pupils would act as effective change-agents at the community level. One of the leading daily newspaper in Kenya, The East African Standard , which covered the event published the success story. | |
