World Environment Day (5th June, 2011)
ImageThe World Environment Day is a globally event commemorated annually. This years event is slated for commemoration on the 5th June, 2011, whose theme is “ Forest: Nature At  Your Service”,  in line with the UN declaration for 2011 as the “International year of Forests”. In Kenya, the forest cover, is barely 2%, far below the international recommended level of 10% of the territorial surface of any country. There are various efforts by the government and partners in rehabilitating and re-afforestation programs throughout the country.  Forests provide important ecological services; carbon sinks for air pollution reduction, reduces soil erosion and enables for recharge of ground water sources and are catchments areas for water sources such as rivers and streams. In addition, are source of economic development, therefore, the need for their protection and conservation is highly regarded.
