NTS014: Business Skills in Water, Sanitation and Solid Waste Management

About the Course

The main thrust of the course is to enable participants to appreciate solid waste management and water and sanitation as source of income generation, exploit solid waste management opportunities in their respective countries through which incomes and employment can be enhanced and appreciate the concept of public private partnership in managing solid waste.

The module provides business skills on solid waste management, technology options involved, contracts management and development of small scale projects opportunities for economic and business activities in the solid waste sub sector. The module also aims to impart knowledge towards establishment of public toilets and water kiosk and possibility of utilizing the opportunities of private partnerships for sustainable investments. It should increase access to water and sanitation services by building the capacity of the participants to manage the facilities at the local level.


The course also recognizes that enabling environment for private involvement is usually an issue (inadequate) in the towns and hence the module is designed to create enabling mechanisms from relevant authorities to facilitate private organizations and individuals for involvement in small scale business in waste management and water and sanitation. Site visits exposure for practical learning is covered to give first hand practical experiences.

Course Objectives

  • Be able to appreciate SWM and WATSAN as a Local Economic Development opportunity.
  • Appreciate the concept of Public Private Partnerships for Local Government Authorities (LGA), private sector and civil society actors.
  • Be able to submit bids in relation to tenders floated by LGA for WASTAN works ( for SMEs and local artisans)
  • Identified key actions for achieving business development

Who can benefit form this course?

This course is designed for senior and middle level managers from water and sanitation utilities and local/municipal authorities/ water service providers. It also covers private investors in the water and sanitation industry.
