ABOUT THE COURSE

The United Nations declared 2008 the international year of sanitation; this step was taken to accelerate progress for 2.65 billion people who are without proper sanitation facilities. Over the years the international community has attempted to provide safe water and promote health for the world’s populations.  The “International Decade for Clean Drinking Water” (1981-1990) sought to address the short fall in water supply; progress was made in providing water for the worlds poorest. This first water decade, brought water to over 1.2 billion people and sanitation to almost 770 million others. Despite these gains it has been reported that every year inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene contributes to the deaths of 1.5 million children and that approximately 42 000 people die every week from diseases related to poor water quality and lack of adequate sanitation.
A 2nd water decade “International Decade for Action, “Water Is Life” (2005-2015) aims at sustaining the momentum towards provision of water for all.  The millennium declaration was made in 2000 in which the international community joined hands in efforts to free the world’s population from abject poverty and dehumanizing living conditions summarized in the 8 Millennium Development Goals which focus on human rights, dignity and development
Access to sanitation is connected to all the Millennium Development Goals.  Studies have shown that the provision of safe drinking water without provision of proper sanitation does not reduce the incidence of water – related diseases.  According o the JMP 2008 most countries in Africa are not on track to meeting the MDGs especially in provision of sanitation.
The course on “Community Led Total Sanitation’ will enhance awareness and equip the participants with skills on how to tackle the global sanitation challenges and how to create more effective and sustainable sanitation Programmes. Using this participatory approach, participants will be well on track to change the sanitation practices through creating awareness among the community and instigating spontaneous action and behavioral changes for more effective sanitation Programmes.
