NTS015: Water Safety Plans as Effective Water Quality Management Tools for Utilities (Run II)

About the Course

Water Safety Plans (WSPs) provide water utilities with a risk based, preventative approach to managing water supplies with the cooperation of other key stakeholders. Successful implementation of WSPs can improve drinking water quality, accrue operational efficiencies and provide a robust framework to better target more sustainable capital investments. Water safety plans also addresses factors that contribute to management of non-revenue water (NRW) through physical water losses in distribution systems.

Target Audience:

The training is aimed at all individuals involved in the management of drinking water quality, including management, operational staff (both quality assurance and engineers) of water suppliers, representatives of government agencies, community supply managers and representatives from NGO’s.

Course Objectives

  • To improve the knowledge and skills of the participants on water safety measures which they can translate into development of Water safety plans in their respective Utilities
  • To appreciate the challenges that may be faced when developing the WSP and define possible solutions that will be derived from shared experiences and best practices from other utilities
  • To identify the linkages between Water Safety Planning and other mandates of water service providers especially reduction of non revenue water, risks assessment, water quality assurance and planning.
  • To share and learn on knowledge, expertise, and practices among different utilities around the world
  • To prepare action plans on the process and commitments to make water safety plans in the utilities

Content of Training:

The training will cover all 11 learning modules of the WHO / IWA Water Safety Plan Manual plus an additional module on the WHO / IWA WSP Quality Assurance Tool. The training will also be adapted for local circumstances, with appropriate case study material and exercises.

Training Outcomes

Each participant shall produce a personal and institutional action plan on how to utilize the skills and knowledge gained during the training to take back to their organization to start or continue implementation of WSPs.
