NTS017: Effluent Treatment and Waste Water ManagementDate: 19th – 23rd November, 2012 (1 Week) Venue: Nairobi, Kenya About the course The increasing scarcity of water in the world along with rapid population increase in urban areas gives reason for concern and the need for appropriate waste water management practices. Over half of the world’s hospitals beds are occupied with people suffering from illnesses linked with contaminated water and more people die as a result of polluted water than are killed by all forms of violence including wars. Very little investment has been made in the past on sewage treatment facilities; water supply and treatment often received more priority than wastewater collection and treatment. However, due to the trends in urban development, wastewater treatment deserves greater emphasis. Currently there is a growing awareness of the impact of sewage contamination on rivers and lakes hence wastewater treatment is now receiving greater attention. To be successful and sustainable, wastewater management must be an integral part of rural and urban development planning, across all sectors, and where feasible transcending political, administrative and jurisdictional borders. This course seeks to assess the status of effluent quality management and to evaluate recent developments and approaches to waste water management. The course will cover key management challenges facing the effluent and waste water sector including waste water reuse, environmental impacts including those of marine discharges, industrial waste treatment processes, environmental management and appropriate treatment technology. Course Objectives - Understand the principles of pollution prevention and control including 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
- Understand wastewater generation and estimated volumes of waste to be generated within urban areas.
- Acquire knowledge on wastewater characterization including flow and load estimation.
- Understand the principles involved in wastewater treatment.
- Identify and select the best applicable technology for the treatment of particular characteristic of wastewater.
- Identify different options for sludge treatment, disposal and reuse
- Identify any potential environmental impacts from the generation of waste at the site
Who can benefit from the course? This course will be of great value to scientists, engineers and managers from the municipal and industrial sectors, academic institutions, regulatory bodies and research centres and all those interested in the developing issues of effluent and waste water quality management. |
