Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Management for Water Utility Companies, Urban Water & Sewerage Authorities

"High levels of NRW are detrimental to the financial viability of water utilities, as well as to the quality of water and environmental sustainability"

Dates: 2nd to 6th August 2010

About the course
Water and sewerage utilities in many African and South Asian cities are currently undergoing significant reform based on the principles of cost recovery, commercialization and demand management. These utilities are mandated to provide sustainable services to all consumers residing in the city, including the poor at affordable rates. Each must adopt effective management and business strategies to meet the challenge. In particular, the water utilities must be not only effective but also efficient in service delivery to ensure affordability of services, wide service coverage and environmental sustainability.
Non-revenue water can be generally grouped into there components: unbilled authorized consumption; apparent losses (water theft and metering inaccuracies); and real losses according to the International Water Association (IWA). Reduction and control of NRW is complex and requires adequate focus on all the three components for sustainability.

This course, therefore, aims at enabling participants to be familiar with key issues; concepts and approaches concerned with non-revenue water management and reduction approaches of water utilities, for enhanced financial and environmental sustainability.
